What an English teacher abroad does
An English teacher abroad plans lessons, explains language, gives learners opportunities to practice, and checks progress. O*NET’s adult English-as-a-second-language teaching profile includes setting objectives, evaluating work, and adapting instruction to learners. It is useful for teaching tasks, but it does not describe every overseas age group or country’s school system. O*NET.
A conversationally fluent English speaker still needs to learn how to teach. Explaining a grammar point, organizing pair work, adjusting instructions, and assessing understanding are different skills from simply holding a conversation. Choose training according to the learners and setting you want to serve.

Do you need a license or certification?
There is no single TEFL certificate that should be treated as permission to teach in every country. Check the destination’s immigration rules, the employer’s qualifications, and any teaching-license requirement for the specific post. A US citizen’s eligibility for one program does not establish eligibility for another country’s visa or school system.
South Korea’s EPIK program illustrates the distinction. Its eligibility page requires a qualifying bachelor’s degree and describes when a TEFL, TESOL, CELTA, or comparable certificate of at least 100 hours is needed for applicants without the specified education or teaching background. The program also has nationality and visa conditions. These are EPIK requirements, not a global TEFL standard. EPIK eligibility.
EPIK’s documentation guidance also specifies how course hours must be shown. A school’s advertised hour count or accreditation badge should therefore be checked against the actual employer’s documentation rules. Resolve whether the exact online course is acceptable before paying or booking travel. EPIK certificate guidance.
Step-by-step: how to become an English teacher abroad
- Choose a destination and teaching setting. Public schools, private language centers, adult classes, and online lessons may have different hiring criteria. Build your course shortlist from the actual role instead of beginning with the largest advertised discount.
- Check eligibility before tuition. Review degree, nationality, visa, background-document, and teaching requirements using official destination or program information. Identify any condition you cannot satisfy before assuming TEFL training will resolve it.
- Compare course assessment and support. Look for lesson planning, feedback, language awareness, and practical teaching opportunities. Verify what the stated hours represent and whether supervised teaching is included or separate.
- Practice teaching a clear objective. Prepare a short lesson around one language outcome, with instructions, examples, learner practice, and a way to check understanding. Ask a qualified reviewer to critique the plan and delivery.
- Prepare the required documentation. Keep the certificate, transcript or course-hour statement, and any other requested documents in the required format. Do not assume a digital badge contains enough information for an employer or visa process.
- Evaluate the employment agreement. Confirm duties, schedule, location, support, and the visa arrangement through the relevant official process. A course provider’s job board or assistance service is not the same as an approved job offer.
Assess a TEFL lesson rather than just the certificate
Write a lesson objective that describes something a learner can do, such as request information politely or distinguish a specific language form. Plan how you will check that outcome, then work backward to the explanation and practice. This prevents a lesson from becoming an unrelated sequence of entertaining activities.
Test your instructions with someone who has not seen the lesson plan. If they cannot explain what to do, simplify the instructions and demonstrate the task. Ask for feedback on how much time learners spend using English rather than listening to you talk about it.
For course selection, request an example of tutor feedback and find out how resubmissions work. An automated quiz can check some knowledge, but it does not show how an instructor would respond to an unclear lesson plan. Choose the support that addresses your current teaching gap.
How long it takes and what it costs
The listed courses use different currencies, hour counts, access windows, and delivery formats. Several prices are temporary promotions, including an October 2026 sale with an explicit end date. Use them as offers checked on October 5, 2026, and confirm the price again before enrolling.
A course described as 120 or 168 hours does not necessarily require that many consecutive calendar hours, and an access window is not an estimated finish date. Budget separately for any teaching practice, document preparation, travel, and destination-specific requirements. Do not fold those unknown costs into an invented all-in price for teaching abroad.

Common mistakes to avoid
Do not confuse a course’s international marketing with universal visa acceptance. Likewise, a regulated qualification level in one education system does not automatically satisfy another country’s teaching-license rules.
Avoid selecting only by the highest hour count or deepest discount. Compare assessment, teaching practice, support, and the target employer’s acceptance. Finally, do not assume job-search assistance guarantees placement or that a course enrollment establishes the right to work abroad.
FAQ
Is a TEFL certificate enough to teach anywhere abroad?
No. EPIK's eligibility rules demonstrate how degree, nationality, visa, and training conditions can apply together.
Is 100 hours a universal requirement?
No. That figure appears in the cited EPIK route. Consult the actual employer and its documentation guidance rather than generalizing it worldwide.
Are all the prices in US dollars?
No. The TEFL comparison includes GBP and USD offers. Preserve the original currency and check the current total before paying.
Does course access equal completion time?
No. The TEFL Org review distinguishes its access window from provider-estimated study time. Your destination's application schedule is a separate constraint.
