Our verdict
Our verdict9.0/10The Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program, presented by Sounds True with Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach, is one of the best-known mindfulness teacher trainings.
It runs as an 18-month online cohort with monthly lessons, live Q&A, small mentor groups, peer meetings and live virtual events, and the FAQ says it is certified by the International Mindfulness Teachers Association. Tuition is $8,700, or $7,900 for those enrolling by October 31, 2026, with 12- and 18-month payment plans and partial scholarships. It is a serious, well-supported program for committed practitioners. The cost and length make it a poor fit for anyone looking for a quick credential.
Best for: Experienced meditators who want a rigorous, mentored path to teaching mindfulness under well-known teachers Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach.

What you’ll learn
MMTCP combines structured mindfulness teachings with practice teaching, guest faculty and a final assessment. The official material describes live virtual events with breakout groups, question sessions and opportunities to connect with other participants. Mentor and peer meetings give the course a sustained interpersonal component.
The program is designed around learning to teach mindfulness, not merely consuming guided meditations. Its practicum and mentor approval are therefore central to evaluating the offer; the prominence of Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach should not replace scrutiny of the day-to-day learning requirements.
Format, schedule and time commitment
MMTCP runs as an 18-month cohort, with about two hours of weekly work plus monthly mentor and peer-group calls. The weekly estimate does not include every appointment or virtual event. Map the calls and events against work and family commitments so you can judge the full participation requirement across a year and a half.
Monthly mentorship and peer meetings continue throughout the program. That repeated contact gives you a more sustained interpersonal learning experience than a course built around independent lessons and one final assessment.

Accreditation and what the credential is worth
According to the FAQ, MMTCP is certified by the International Mindfulness Teachers Association (IMTA). Students earn the MMTCP certificate after completing coursework, passing the final exam, and receiving mentor approval.
IMTA recognition is the specific external claim made in the program FAQ. The completion certificate still depends on coursework, an exam and mentor approval; it should not be described as a university degree or clinical qualification.
Admission requires both an application and acceptance. Plan for that selection step before assuming you can simply buy immediate course access.
Price, payment plans and refunds
The October 5, 2026 tuition is $8,700, reduced to $7,900 for enrollment by October 31, 2026. Applying requires a nonrefundable $50 deposit. Twelve- and 18-month payment plans are available; one early-enrollment example is 12 payments of $683.
The $50 application fee cannot be refunded, and cancellation after acceptance carries a charge of at least 15%. The 12-payment example also adds up to more than the discounted upfront tuition. Compare the full plan cost and cancellation schedule separately from the initial application payment.
The published early-enrollment offer, checked October 5, 2026, lowers tuition from $8,700 to $7,900 if you enroll by October 31, 2026. Confirm that the discount appears in your acceptance and payment documents, including any terms that apply to the installment option you choose.
Early-enrollment saving published on the official site: enroll by October 31, 2026 to pay $7,900 instead of $8,700

Who it’s best for — and who should skip it
Experienced meditators seeking a rigorous, mentored transition into teaching under Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach are the clearest audience. The value lies in sustained teaching development, not simply the faculty names on a certificate. Someone looking mainly for a quick, low-cost completion award is unlikely to need this level of commitment.
Pros and cons in detail
Recognizable teaching leadership. Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach lead the program with guest faculty, giving it a defined mindfulness orientation.
Mentorship over time. Monthly mentor and peer sessions throughout 18 months create continuity beyond a single final consultation.
Named external recognition. IMTA certification is a specific claim you can check against how you intend to use the training.
Some scholarship support. Partial need-based scholarships are available to investigate, although availability does not mean every applicant receives an award.
A substantial tuition decision. At $7,900 to $8,700, the program needs to justify its cost through the learning experience you want, not just familiarity with the teachers.
Applying has a cost. Selection and the nonrefundable fee come before securing a place, so read the admissions requirements first.
Eighteen months of participation. The long timeline makes sustained attendance as important as the ability to complete individual lessons.
How it compares
Radiance Sutras’ MTT-200 takes a shorter, method-specific approach: 20 weeks across six months, with live classes available as replays and eligibility for Yoga Alliance RYT-200 registration. Public pages do not state the 200-hour tuition. They do list an advanced route to a 500-hour certificate at $4,900, or a $1,800 deposit plus monthly payments, with required texts around $50.
Radiance Sutras suits meditators drawn to teacher-led, non-dogmatic instruction and the RYT-200 pathway. Its unpublished foundation price prevents a direct tuition comparison until you request a quote. Our MMTCP–Radiance Sutras comparison also considers the different teaching approaches.
The Mindfulness Center’s SOMA training offers 160 hours online at your own pace. A public tuition figure could not be verified, and independent accreditation was not established from the available information.
The Bethesda 501(c)(3) nonprofit may appeal if you want an evidence-based, science-oriented meditation certificate with independent pacing. You must apply to learn the cost because it is absent from the training page. The comparison with SOMA helps separate that structure from MMTCP’s cohort commitments.
Mindvalley is a different kind of purchase: membership costs $499 annually, roughly $41.50 per month billed yearly, or $299 a year for a single pathway. Its 12-month access centers on Quests with short daily lessons. Some separately priced coach certifications are described as ICF-accredited, but membership itself has no accreditation.
That large guided-program library is aimed at personal growth, with paid coach training a possible later purchase. The membership includes a 15-day money-back guarantee and does not confer a professional credential. It is a useful alternative only if your immediate goal is personal development rather than supervised teacher preparation.
Use the meditation teacher training category to compare sustained cohort mentorship with independent meditation education. Price alone cannot show how much contact each format asks you to maintain.
